Cognitive therapy rests on a warm and trusting relationship between the therapist and client. Cognitive therapy is a collaborative relationship in which the therapist and client are working on mutually agreed upon therapeutic goals. In the context of an open therapy relationship clients look at difficult experiences they have and learn about the interactions between thoughts, behaviors and moods in their lives. CBT focuses on helping clients develop new thinking and behavioral skills. There is research evidence that suggests that when clients develop new skills in therapy they are more likely to get better and stay better. These new skills seem to minimize the possibility of relapse after the conclusion of treatment.
